Selection Reasoning:
Above The Rest landed this race in fine style last season when rated a pound higher. He enjoys this flat course and is a horse that is better than a handicapper at his best. This Class 2 handicap will have been on the radar of his shrewd trainer David Barron having won it last season and placed fourth the year before. He ran better than his finishing position of seventh at Thirsk last Month when “caught as the meat in the sandwich” forcing his jockey Robbie Downey to pull him backwards at the business end of the race. Robbie retains the ride and he is well drawn in stall 19 as they usually come over to the near side rail on soft ground or at worst up the middle. It will take a big effort to carry 9-13 to victory on soft ground but at a massive price this proven performer is worth getting onside.

Selection Reasoning:
Great Prospector is a bigger price than stable mate Aljady yet is the choice of number one jockey Paul Hanagan. He is drawn low which might be a tough draw but does usually allow the horse to save some ground turning in to the straight. This four year old is well handicapped on a rating of 94. His recent run when third to Safe Voyage reads really well as that winner has landed a listed and Group 3 race subsequently. From a handicapping perspective it doesn’t make sense that Lord Oberon is a shorter price than Great Prospector on their meeting at Doncaster last November. Lord Oberon won that day but in receipt of 13lbs from Great Prospector who was 4 lengths behind. Great Prospector was highly tried as a 2yo and placed at listed level last season. He looks dangerous off 94 in this valuable handicap if seeing out this 7f trip fully.

Selection Reasoning:
Shallow Hal is a very funny movie but also a pretty good racehorse trained by Kieran Burke. He loves soft or heavy ground so the torrential rain during the week is most welcome for this son of Mayson. This very valuable race will have been the target and we can forget his first two runs of the season over 7 furlongs. This is his trip on soft to heavy ground and he’s dropped back to a rating of 87 which is the same mark he finished runner up to My Boy Lewis at Doncaster on soft ground at the backend of last season. The application of first time visor means business and at a massive price and low weight of 8-6 we can hit the frame at huge double digit odds.

Cosmic Law

Selection Reasoning:
Cosmic Law ran a good race at Chester on his first run of the current season. The winner was in receipt of 15lbs yet was all out to hold off Cosmic Law on the line. Richard Fahey won this race with Mr Lupton back in 2016 so knows what type of horse is required for the job. Last season Cosmic Law won at Epsom over this trip on soft ground and placed twice at pattern level. He is rated 96 which is just alright but might be one to progress more as a three year old for his colourful owner John Dance. Drawn nicely in the middle with options and ridden by PJ Mcdonald, Cosmic Law is proven on this ground and should run a big race.
