The Great St Wifrid Handicap at Ripon (3.15) catches our attention today and Vintage Brut and Muscika are the value bets.
First time blinkers and a drop in class to handicap company could just be the perfect recipe for Vintage Brut. The three year old has yet to recapture the spark he showed late last season when scooting home in a six furlongs Listed on soft ground at York. Tim Easterby and jockey David Allan are looking to win this hotly contested affair for the second time in three years having struck gold with Mattmu here two years ago.
Vintage Brut is off a mark of 102 due to the 3 lbs. weight for age allowance. The soft ground is a major plus and from stall 12 in the middle Allan has plenty of options. The Brut looks a major player.
A 6 lbs. turnaround should help Muscika reverse placings with Lahore who beat him by a length over track and trip just twelve days ago. Before that he was beaten half a length by Dakota Gold at York but is now 3 lbs. better off with that rival who must be respected again particularly as he was second in this race last year. Muscika has been second in his last three races and there’s every chance that David O’Meara’s runner will go one better now.
O’Meara certainly has a strong hand as he also runs Gulliver and, interestingly, Inistaab who has twice won over course and distance. There are mixed vibes about last year’s winner Gunmetal who is top weight now and was uneasy in the market yesterday while a rejuvenated Josephine Gordon has good prospects on Richenza. Others in the mix are Summerghand and Lake Volta but Vintage Brut and Muscika are the pair to concentrate on.
