Alan King’s seven year old has been mixing in hot company and ran a cracker when second to On The Blind Side – conceding him 6 lbs. – over track and trip last time out. Our selection got a bit tight to the last losing vital momentum and the very sharp winner had flown. Talkischeap has also been second twice to wonder mare La Bague Au Roi at Newbury, and of course that winner has won two Grade Ones since including a notable success at the Dublin Racing Festival at Leopardstown.
Also boosting the form in no uncertain manner is Lostintranslation, who ran in both of those red hot Newbury contests, has since won a Grade 2 and chased home Defi Du Seuil in a Grade 1 at Sandown.
Realistically Talkischeap should be a warm favourite today and the current odds represent great value. Not that it will be easy mind, and Glen Rocco also boasts fine track and trip form as indeed does Adrien Du Pont. Rather Be represents the in form Nicky Henderson and, while hard to assess, stepping up to three miles could help.
Any market moves for the J P McManus owned Modus – twice a winner at this track – should be noted though he does look somewhat exposed at this stage. All things considered Talkischeap has the class, the best form in the book and the most scope for further improvement.
The fact that King is letting him compete at handicap class, when he is obviously well able to compete at a higher level, is a tip in itself. King clearly found a mark of 145 too hard to resist, and he has undoubtedly passed up a Cheltenham opportunity to chase a pot of gold here, and the horse will possibly next appear at Aintree or Ayr. Flatter tracks probably suit better.
Opportunity knocks big time off 11-3 here with Wayne Hutchinson aboard. This progressive and still somewhat unexposed chaser could well go on to even bigger things in the future but he must be backed today. Get on!
