Take aim with Duel At Dawn

A decent novice last season, his best effort came at this meeting when a good second to Ms Parfois in a hot novice and the winner went on to run a cracker in the four miler at Cheltenham.

Our selection didn't fare too well in that contest where a mistake at the eleventh unhinged him, but another outstanding novice run from earlier was a good second to Sizing Tennessee at Cheltenham. And that winner has certainly franked the form this season winning the Ladbrokes Trophy.

Duel At Dawn clearly needed his belated seasonal debut at Haydock just before Christmas. He ran prominently for a long way and led on a few occasions, but faded from four out to finish in midfield. While he clearly was in need of the run in the closing stages, the ground was also a huge factor. While this son of Presenting has won on soft ground, he is best at either good or good to soft.

So the heavy going at Haydock was all wrong while, in complete contrast, today's surface at Warwick looks ideal. What really catches the eye though is his handicap mark of 137 and he looks perfectly poised off just 10 - 5. Opportunity knocks today!

Un Temps Pour Tout has a touch of class, and in a way is hard to assess. It won't be easy for David Pipe's runner off top weight, and his last run - last of five in a hot hurdle contest - tells us little. That was his first run since winning the Ultima Chase at the 2017 Cheltenham Festival and we suspect that his main targets are much later in the season.

Anything Colin Tizzard runs these days merits the utmost respect, and Ultragold and Sizing Codelco are both fair operators, though the latter hasn't run since last May. Paul Nicholls is another trainer in form and while Ibis Du Rheu finished a distant second to The World's End at Cheltenham, that was a decent effort. Corgi had a very tough race when winning narrowly at the same meeting and has won twice at this track from six outings.

Impulsive Star, like our selection, runs off an attractive mark and his second to OK Corral at Plimpton puts him in the mix. Crosspark has faded after a fine start to the season and finished a remote fourth in this race last year. Step Back and Callet Mad have claims too, indeed a case can be made for them all.

But if Duel At Dawn retains even some of the sparkle from his novice days last season he has a golden chance off his current mark.
