Probe & Bless Him in Bunbury Cup

Today is called Super Saturday with top class racing at Newmarket, York & Ascot. We take aim at the Bunbury Cup at Newmarket.

The Bunbury Cup is named in honour of Sir Charles Bunbury (1740–1821), who served as the Senior Steward of the Jockey Club. He introduced both of the Classics held at Newmarket, the 1,000 Guineas and the 2,000 Guineas. It is run on the final day of Newmarket's three-day July Festival meeting.

It’s difficult to know that sort of ground we will get tomorrow. The rain should have eased off tonight and it could be on the good side by tomorrow afternoon. Last years winner Bless Him is back for more and just the 2lbs higher in the ratings that last year. He came home strongly from the back of the pack over a mile in the Royal Hunt Cup so stays this stiff 7 furlongs well. A high draw in stall 17 could prove the place to be and this horse just loves coming over the top up a stiff hill finish in strongly run races.

Probe looks well overpriced having won cosily here over 6f on good to soft ground in a heritage handicap in May. He quickened out of the pack that day to run down Chairmanoftheboard and looks sure to stay 7 furlongs in my opinion. I think he was found things happening too fast over six furlongs on fast ground at Epsom and Ascot. A bit of cut in the ground along with the extra furlong will suit this son of Kingsman nicely and Trevor Whelan has ridden him to win before. He carries a low weight of 9 stone and could surprise from stall 1.

Newmarket 4:00

0.5 point each way Bless Him 14/1 Ladbrokes & Coral, both 5 places.

0.5 point each way Probe 16/1 generally, 5 places.

Best of Luck, Nicky
