Powering To Midlands National Victory

The Midlands National is the perfect tonic to recover from the busy Cheltenham Festival drama. We made a profit of +6.57 points over the week but oh it could have been so much more if Column Of Fire had made if over the final hurdle as the final leg of our Super Heinz bet. You can view the full results at Cheltenham Festival 2020 Results.

Petite Power was on our radar for this race since the abandoned Eider Chase. All the same reasoning applies to his chance in this marathon handicap chase over four miles two furlongs on heavy ground. Petite Power carries 10 stone with Mr Liam Harrison his regular rider claiming off a further 7lbs! Such a feather weight is a big positive over staying trips on testing ground. Liam Harrison (7lb claimer) has ridden Petite Power all season looking well capable in the saddle.

Petite Power is in the form of his life having won twice already this season and just narrowly beaten before Christmas. The win on heavy ground at Uttoxeter catches the eye earlier this season. The key bit of form though was in the Classic Chase at Warwick. Petite Power galloped on dourly to claim third place having been outpaced into the straight not helped by Darlac who fell in front of him at the fourth last fence. That was a truly run race where Captain Chaos set a very strong tempo up front jumping for fun. As we know Captain Chaos went on to land the Grimthorpe Handicap Chase at Doncaster by all of 54 lengths!  The Midlands National represents a drop-in class for Petite Power from Grade 3 to Listed handicap level. Missing the Eider Chase might prove a blessing as it has given Petite Power 63 days to recover from the Classic Chase.
