PIPERS TO HIT THE RIGHT NOTE

Don’t underestimate the advantage of having a low draw in the Great St. Wilfrid at Ripon this afternoon. Anyone that delves into racecourse trends will be able to tell you how imperative a good draw is when it comes to sprints at the North Yorkshire venue. When the ground is on the quick side, you want to be drawn low and when its testing, the opposite is preferred. Ripon is also very much a specialist course as its contours along with its noticeably uphill finish means that strong course form is a necessity when placing a bet at the Garden Racecourse. As such, I have sided with two runners who fit both criteria. Growl, drawn in Stall 4, who has performed well here in the past and Pipers Note, an eight-time course winner allotted the plum draw in stall 1.

The aforementioned Growl is one of my guilty pleasures and followers of this weekly blog will be all too familiar with his name. The nine-year-old may not be as good as he was when second to The Tin Man in the 2016 Qipco British Champions Sprint, but he still retains plenty of ability as illustrated in his last two runs. Such recent evidence has me convinced that there’s a major handicap in the former stakes winner, who is currently 15lbs below his career best mark of 114. On his penultimate start, he was close fourth behind today’s rival, Flying Pursuit, at York from an unsavoury high draw. The Malton-based runner subsequently backed that up with a massive run in the Stewards’ Cup a fortnight ago. That latter performance was particularly eyecatching in what was probably a slightly stronger field to the one he’ll face today. Richard Fahey’s stable jockey, Paul Hanagan takes the ride. Hanagan would have had the option of partnering any of Fahey’s four runners and the fact that he chose Dr Marwan Koukash’s gelding over the rest is surely a tip in itself.  He has been well-supported through the night and understandably so, but at 15/2, there is still enough juice in his price to warrant a selection.

Pipers Note, on the other hand, was second in this last year behind the extremely well-treated, Mattmu. Ruth Carr's charge is in rude health at present with his last two runs resulting in visits to the winners' enclosure. Both wins were over today's C&D bringing his total number of course wins to eight. However, despite his fond affection for the track, he is yet to land its most valuable prize. Asides from finishing second last years' renewal, he was fifth in 2014 and fourth in 2016 when trained by Richard Whitaker. Thankfully, everything looks tailor made for him to land the spoils this afternoon. The ground and draw couldn't be more ideal and off 10/1, he screams value. Even with his 9lb hike in the weights for his two recent wins, he is still lining up 1lb than he did here twelve months back. For me, he's the each-way bet of the day.
