Nestled between Chester and York is a rather low-key weekend’s racing. Over the past week, we have been spoilt with what can only be described as truly top-class action. Saxon Warrior’s win in the 2000 Guineas gave the Coolmore operation an invaluable stallion prospect for the future. The son of Japanese wondersire, Deep Impact, will surely entice a swarm of breeders through the iconic blue gates, all eager to experiment with the royally-bred Classic winner. The 66/1 shot Billesdon Brook defied all logic in winning the 1000 Guineas, while across the Atlantic, Justify’s scintillating performance in the Kentucky Derby surely has his trainer, Bob Baffert, dreaming of further Triple Crown glory.  During the week, Chester played host to some extremely promising middle-distance prospects. None more so than Rosptropovich in Thursday’s Dee Stakes, who powered clear of the second, My Lord And Master, off the home turn to record a facile three-and-three-quarter length success. With exactly three weeks to go to the Epsom Derby, Aidan O’Brien appears to hold all the aces for the twelve-furlong classic. So much so that the maestro of Ballydoyle is as short as 1/5 with Paddy Power to equal Vincent O’Brien’s record winning tally on June 2nd.

Despite it being sub-standard Saturday in terms of quality, the wide-open complexion of several of the big handicaps offers a plethora of value propositions. One such race is Ascot’s feature, totescoop6 Victoria Cup. Here, I have identified two against the field whose odds, in my opinion, are far too big to ignore. Ironically, one is named after an well-known film character and the other one is named after a once highly influential movie star. The first one, Keyser Soze, will come as no surprise. For me, he is the class horse in the race. Like last year’s Victoria Cup scorer, Ocean Tempest, he is lining up of the back of a third place finish in last month’s Spring Cup at Newbury. Returning from a 303-day break, he created seriously eyecatching effort from which I expect him to improve considerably. To avail of the better ground on the near rail, he was deliberately slow away from stalls and while that manoeuvre was vindicated, one was left thinking how far he might have won had it not been for the draw. Drawn in Stall 1, he was the only runner from a single-figure stall to finish in the top 10. Taking this into account, his subsequent 3lb hike in the weights (90 to 93) is more than fair and gives connections another opportunity of landing a major handicap. To further boast his claims, he should prove more effective dropping back to seven furlongs from a mile. The Richard Spencer trained chesnut possesses a high cruising speed and the presence of strong early pace setters drawn close by should see the race pan out perfectly for him. He’s currently available at 5/1 with most firms and I’d expect that to contract considerably closer to the off.

My other fancy is last year’s Goodwood Mile second, Tony Curtis, representing the same trainer/ jockey combination that shocked so many in last weekend’s 1000 Guineas. Richard Hannon’s charge has been on my radar all winter as I am convinced there is a major handicap in the Rock Of Gibraltar gelding. He didn’t shape too badly in the Spring Cup last time on his seasonal reappearance. At the three-furlong marker, he looked the most likely winner, travelling smoothly up front. Although he tired late on, it was a very encouraging performance and one that should bring about a lot of improvement. Given the generous each-way terms on offer, he more than merits a wager at 16/1.
