Aye Aye Captain in Classic

Following the Welsh National last Saturday we have another marathon handicap chase to get stuck into today.

The Classic Chase is a staple every January and we have proper winter ground this time round.

Captain Chaos has shown little so far this season sent off at prices 33/1 and greater. As a result of those uninspiring runs the handicapper has dropped him 6lbs which sets him up nicely for heavy ground racing which he enjoys. Captain Chaos jumped well setting a strong tempo up front in this race last season only to get outstayed by Kimberlite Candy after the final fence. Hopefully, he will save a little more energy for the finish this time carrying just 10-2. He showed he thrives in testing conditions when winning the Grimthorpe Chase at Doncaster by 54 lengths in heavy ground. Dan Skelton has put the blinkers back on and all looks set for a big run. A big positive at Warwick are prominent chasers who jump well putting the rest on the back foot.

Storm Control represents trainer Kerri Lee who landed this race with Russe Blanc in 2016. Storm Control has shown improved form since going out in trip to three miles plus at Cheltenham this season. He has won twice at Cheltenham at both the November and December meetings. His last run was over 3m2f on soft ground when he beat Potters Legend by a length. The official result does not tell the full story as Storm Control jumped the final fence over 6 lengths ahead of Potters Legend only to idle badly on the climb to the line. It looked certain he would throw the race away, however as soon as he felt or heard Potters Legend on his hind quarters, he picked up again winning going away. That run tells us this horse is saving plenty for himself and is not badly treated off a 5lb higher handicap mark of 142. He carries 10-8 and should get the trip well. It is most likely he will lead up front and can use his fluent jumping to stretch those in behind.
