Advised Saturday Morning 11th July

Racecourse: Newmarket
Time: 14:25
Date: 11/07/2020
Horse: Spring of Love
Current Odds: 11/2 Skybet 4 places else 11/2 generally
Advised Stake & Bet Type: 0.5 Point Each Way
Selection Reasoning

Spring of Love is worth backing on her third career start and second of the current season. She won impressively on debut over course and distance in a good maiden last October. The ground was good to soft that day which bodes well with similar underfoot conditions this afternoon. It is easy to forgive her run at Haydock. She never settled for James Doyle racing freely in behind the leaders. Connections have wisely gone with a hood today and don’t be surprised to see her ridden more prominently by William Buick. She drops back to handicap level off a mark of 88 with just 8-12 on her back. A race of this nature is well within her compass so long as she settles so hopefully she has matured from her Haydock run.

Horse: Hello Youmzain
Current Odds: 9/2 Boylesports & Bet365 else 4/1 Skybet all paying 4 places * BOG
Advised Stake & Bet Type: 1.0 Point Each Way
Selection Reasoning

The July Cup is the race of the day with the best 3yo sprinters taking on the older generation. Golden Horde won the Commwealth Cup well at Royal Ascot and gets a significant 6lbs pull at the weights and is deservingly favourite. Three of the first four in the Diamond Jubilee stakes run again and it was mighty close between Hello Youzain and Sceptical with Khadeem running well if a bit too freely. The rain softened ground puts me off Khadeem & Sceptical so we stick with our Ascot winner Hello Youmzain. Hello Youmzain flew the gates at Ascot leading for most of the race but most impressively was how he fought back having been headed by Sceptical. Hello Youmzain can land another Group 1 if handling this course looking well drawn alongside Sceptical and not far from Oxted.

Horse: Tomfre
Current Odds: 10/1 William Hill & Skybet, both paying 5 places
Advised Stake & Bet Type: 0.5 Point Each Way
Selection Reasoning

Tomfre as a three year old gets a huge 8lbs from his elders leaving him carrying just 8-6 despite his rating of 98. He beat a listed winner (Milltown Star) over course and distance last season on soft ground. This season he ran too freely first time up at Linfield before going very close at Sandown beaten a short head over 7f on good ground. He flew home at Sandown having had his run checked somewhat a couple of furlongs from the finish. Harry Bentley is riding very well and is as stylish a jockey you will see riding presently. Ralph Beckett has kept Tomfre fresh for this assignment which looks to have been a well thought out plan. Tomfre is drawn in stall 9 leaving his jockey the option to choose his side.

Horse: Cardsharp
Current Odds: 28/1 generally & most bookies paying 5 places, use BOG bookies
Advised Stake & Bet Type: 0.5 Point Each Way
Selection Reasoning

Cardsharp has dropped to a handicap mark of 103 having won last season at York when rated 4lbs higher off 107. He is a classy horse for handicaps having won the Group 2 July Stakes on this course as a juvenile. Last season he seemed to run well every second race winning twice over the full season. This season he started well in a very hot listed race at Haydock when finishing just 4l behind Space Blues and Safe Voyage. Ignore this Ascot run as he has never run near his best at that course. A mile stretches Cardsharp’s stamina and he didn’t get home over a mile at Windsor last time out. Well drawn in stall 19 over a course and trip that he enjoys, it is worth backing Cardsharp to bounce back to his best under James Doyle. Mark Johnston won this race with Vale of Kent last season so knows what is required and of the pair I believe Cardsharp is better handicapped this time round.

Horse: Skardu
Current Odds: 7/1 Bet365 else 13/2 generally, use BOG bookies
Advised Stake & Bet Type: 0.5 Point Each Way
Selection Reasoning

This is a very interesting renewal of the Summer Mile Stakes with Mohaather all the rage. Everyone saw how he failed to get a clear run in the Queen Anne Stakes over the straight mile. The leaders controlled the pace of that race up front putting those ridden cold out the back at a big disadvantage. Duke of Hazzard and Skardu were the other two Queen Anne runners inconvenienced be the slow fractions up front. If the ground had been good to firm then Duke of Hazzard and Zaaki would be players but on good ground I think Skardu is good value. Last season he race a cracker in the St James’s Palace stakes finishing on the tails of proper horses such as Circus Maximus, King of Comedy & Too Darn Hot. Skardu has similar conditions tomorrow bar for being drawn in stall 4 rather than stall 3. Tom Marquand takes over riding duties with James Doyle working at Nemarket. Skardu is a classy horse who won the Craven stakes and finished third in the 2000 guineas both at Newmarket.

Horse: Stone of Destiny
Current Odds: 10/1 Paddy Power & Betfair SB, both paying 5 places & BOG
Advised Stake & Bet Type: 0.5 Point Each Way
Selection Reasoning

Stone of Destiny failed to get home over 6f in the Wokingham stakes last month. He was in second place behind winner Hey Jonesy a furlong from home when his run flattened out. On Shergar Cup day last season he did really well to get up late from a poor draw in stall 1. His form fell apart following that win but he has returned this season in good form again. On his first start at Newmarket on fast ground he finished fourth beaten just over 2l by Makanah. Rob Hornby takes over riding duties and we know it is best to side with proven course performers on the Ascot straight course.

Horse: Final Venture
Current Odds: 22/1 generally, look for bookies paying 5 places and BOG.
Advised Stake & Bet Type: 0.5 Point Each Way
Selection Reasoning

Final Venture and Stone of Destiny fought out the finish on Shergar Cup day last summer. Both horses look well treated again off a few pounds lower over course and distance. Final Venture is getting on but is a classy performer who showed up well at Doncaster in a listed sprint on his seasonal debut. Paul Midgley’s runner has a good record at Ascot finishing runner up twice by a nose and short head from three runs. He handles both good and quick ground well and is drawn in the middle from stall 11.
