ADVISED MONDAY NIGHT 17TH JUNE

Racecourse & Time

Ascot – 14:30

Advised Stake & Bet Type

1/2 Point Each Way

Name of Horse to Back

Beat The Bank

Current Odds:

33/1 Betvictor, Coral & 888sport 4 places else 25/1 William Hill 5 places, use BOG bookies

Selection Reasoning:

Beat The Bank let us down in the Lockinge Stakes when drawn on the wing, seeing plenty of daylight. It was the second time Beat The Bank has failed to show his true running in the Lockinge so maybe he doesn’t like that course. The positive is he ran a cracker in the Queen Anne last season off the back of a poor Lockinge Stakes effort so hopefully he will bounce back again this year. We know he has the ability has he won nicely at Sandown on fast ground earlier this season enjoying every yard of the mile trip. The stiff finish at Ascot and hopefully strong pace will suit Beat the Bank ideally as he is a strong stayer at this trip. Last year he was unlucky not to win this race when not getting a clear run before powering home but all too late. Sylvester De Sousa is the owners designate jockey this season and should get a lovely toe into the race with Laurens and Mythical Magic drawn nearby. Beat The Bank looks overpriced on the best of his form having won on the round course at Ascot while running well on the straight course at this meeting last year.

Romanised

Current Odds:

25/1 William Hill 5 places else 28/1 PaddyPower and Betfair SB both 4 places, use BOG bookies

Selection Reasoning:

Romanised is massively overpriced and with the bookies paying 4 places we can get him onside as well as Beat The Bank. He is a classic winner having won the Irish guineas giving trainer Ken Condon his first classic winner. He failed to reach the heights of his Curragh win for the rest of his three year old season. This season he looks to be back near his best having run well without winning at Naas and then at Newbury in the Lockinge Stakes won by Mustashry with Laurens and Accidental just ahead and Le Brivido a neck behind. This season on both starts Billy Lee has got him well covered up behind runners but unable to get a clear passage at the business ends of his races. A strongly run mile with a stiff finish is just the job for this horse as that is the conditions he enjoyed when coming home so strongly to win the Irish Guineas at the Curragh last season.

Coeur De Lion

Current Odds:

7/1 Paddy Power 6 places else 7/1 generally look for 5 places, use BOG bookies

Selection Reasoning:

The Irish trainers have dominated this marathon flat race over 2m4f winning the past five renewals. Willie Mullins is very much respected relying on sole representative Buildmeupbuttercup but she offers no value priced up as favourite. Both Snow Falcon and Mengli Khan are interesting as both are Grade 1 horses over fences but it is the Alan King trained Coeur De Lion who looks sure to be involved in the finish of this race. He arrives in cracking form having won the Chester Plate handicap in taking fashion. His claiming rider Thore Hammer Hansen (bit of a mouthful!) looked very tidy at Chester when riding him out on soft ground. Alan King allows Thore to keep the ride and that 5lbs claim could prove vital. The handicapper raised Coeur De Lion 5lbs to a rating of 93 which is only 2lbs above the rating he raced from here last year when sixth behind a battalion of Willie Mullins trained runners. The slower ground this year will help Coeur De Lion who is a proven stayer. National Hunt trainers excel in staying flat races and Alan King is one of the best for the home team.

Magic Wand

Current Odds:

9/2 generally, look for 4 places, use BOG bookies

Selection Reasoning:

The more I look at this race the more my eye keeps getting drawn to Magic Wand. She is a Group 1 filly in receipt of 5lbs from her male counterparts down in class to Listed level! The last time she ran below Group 1 level was when she showed a telling turn of foot to win the Group 2 Ribblesdale Stakes at this meeting in 2018. That victory was over 1m4f but she has such a good turn of foot this two furlong shorter trip is sure to be in her favour. The likes of Latrobe and Addeybb were on the shortlist but are more grinders lacking the turn of foot so crucial at this level. Elarqam looks the main threat having won impressively at Goodwood at listed level but carries a 3lb penalty for that win which means he is conceding 8lbs to the Coolmore filly.
