Selection Reasoning:

Southern Sam looks on a nice handicap mark considering he pushed Beakstown all the way before losing 2l at Uttoxeter in November. The winner has shot up the ratings to 142 and holds an entry in the Ballymore hurdle next Wednesday. Southern Sam ran better than the official loss of 13l at Ascot in December. He was bang there in contention but his jockey lost his whip over the second last flight and it proved hard work from that point to the line over a trip of 2m5.5f on soft ground.

Last time out he ran much better just losing out to a well fancied Nicky Henderson runner who had too much speed for Southern Sam. This trip and stiff finish on soft ground looks sure to suit and Leighton Aspell is a class jockey. Southern Sam runs from a rating of 123 and that looks workable carrying 10-11 with the soft ground making it hard work for the top weights.

First Flow

Current Odds:

12/1 PaddyPower & Betfair Sportsbook 5 places else 12/1 Ladbrokes 4 places , use BOG bookies

Selection Reasoning:

First Flow is a very interesting runner not seen since he was pulled up in the Grade 1 Supreme Novices hurdle almost a year ago. The dry winter will not have helped as First Flow needs soft ground or worse to show his best and gets that ground here over his best trip of two miles. Kim Baily will have had an eye on this race leading into the Cheltenham festival as First Flow is very highly regarded having won a Grade 2 novice hurdle last season on heavy at Haydock beating Midnight Shadow by ten lengths. Last year’s winner Call Me Lord runs off a rating of 160 which keeps the weights down and forces the bottom four horses to compete out of the handicap proper. First Flow is due to carry 10-10 and can get the job done with Kim Baily having a decent record running his horses off the back of long breaks.
