Selection Reasoning:
Proschema put in a cracking effort to place in the Northumberland Plate from a very wide draw in stall 17. He was settled out the back by 3lb claimer Jane Elliott but she had her run stopped slightly by King’s Advice up the straight both horses came up the centre for a clear run. Proschema took a while to get going but once in top gear came home best of all hitting the line hard.
The aforementioned King’s Advice was turned up quickly to land a heritage handicap at the Newmarket July meeting giving the form a big boost. Proschema is better drawn in stall 8 this time round with stable jockey Richard Kingscote booked to ride. This four year old is full of potential and remains very much open to progression off a pound higher mark over marathon trips. Any deterioration of the good ground with showers forecast will not be an issue with winning soft ground form.

Selection Reasoning:
Coeur De Lion and Who Dares Wins represent locally based trainer Alan King. The last named won the Northumberland Plate in great fashion but it is Coeur De Lion who might enjoy a winning turn in this race renamed the Marsh Cup. Coeur De Lion ran well to finish third in this race last season when not getting the clearest of runs up the straight under Martin Harley.
He raced from a mark of 91 that day and is just 2lbs higher this year but in affect 3lbs better in thanks to 5lb claimer Thore Hammer Hansen riding him. Earlier this season he ran a good race to finish a head in front of Who Dares Wins over 2m2f on soft ground and is a couple of pounds better off today. The Northumberland Plate form is very strong and several runners’ line up today including some tough Mark Johnston trained stayers. Making Miracles was tempting but is lumbered with a huge weight so is skipped over for now.

Selection Reasoning:
The Tin Man and Donjuan Triumphant are the two to concentrate on bringing proper Group 1 form into this Group 3 race. Both horses will be taking this race on route to running in the Sprint Cup Stakes at Haydock in September won so impressively by The Tin Man last season. The more rain the better for Donjuan Triumphant but not as important for The Tin Man who has run well on both runs this season.
The Tin Man finished third to Dream of Dreams (in receipt of 7lbs) at Windsor when needing the run. Dream of Dreams franked that form with a close second in the Diamond Jubilee stakes at Royal Ascot where The Tin Man finished a respectable fourth. He looked a bit taken off his feet that day on good to firm ground and as he ages might just prefer some more cut in the ground. This race looks a very good opportunity for Oisin Murphy to steer The Tin Man to victory.

Smash Williams is top rated in this premier handicap off a rating of 104. However, this is plenty of encouraging past form to suggest he can strike for trainer Jim Bolger. Firstly, Jim has employed the services of Gavin Ryan who claims 7lbs reducing the weight to carry from 9-12 to 9-05. Gavin has a 28% strike rate riding for Jim Bolger having rode 8 winners from 29 rides for a level stakes profit of +16.88.
On this card last season it was the Group 2 Minstrel Stakes that Smash Williams raced in finishing a very respectable fourth to Larchmont Lad over 7 furlongs. On Irish Champions weekend Smash Williams finished runner up to Soffia in the “Bold Lad” premier handicap over 6 furlongs rated 104 and carrying 9-11. This season Smash Williams is running consistently well only dropping a couple of pounds in the ratings following solid Group 3 runs. He will appreciate going back up in trip having found 5 furlongs too sharp in the Rockingham handicap run here last month.

Manuela De Vega is available at a bigger price that reflects her chance to winning the Irish Oaks. She will relish this open galloping course compared to the Epsom where she ran well to finish fourth in the Epsom Oaks. Drawn low in stall 1 at Epsom she was settled towards the rear before making her move up the finishing straight. At times her jockey Harry Bentley had to sit and wait with the gaps hard to find and his filly was brave holding her line as the fillies further up the chamber came downwards bumping into Manuela De Vega. Previously, our filly had finished runner up to Mehdaayih in the Cheshire Oaks who landed a Group 2 in France last month. Well drawn in stall 2 and given lots of time to recover from her Epsom Oaks exertions we can expect another bold run from Manuela De Vega trained by Ralph Beckett.

Selection Reasoning:
Royal Village has crept up the ratings 8lbs since winning the Prelude Handicap Chase over course and distance last October. He jumped super that day off the front end and battled on well from the last fence to the line. In late May he won at Uttoxeter holding Pacific De Baune by 2.5 lengths and is better off at the weights with the runner up who won readily at Newton Abbott thereafter. Tom O’Brien gets a great tune out of Royal Village and it is a positive that he races prominently around this turning course. Casablanca Mix was on the shortlist having won well at Aintree and the runner up going on to win twice. However, she has 11-6 on her back and that might be too much to carry in such a competitive handicap chase.
