ADVISED FRIDAY NIGHT 12th JULY

Racecourse & Time

Ascot – 13:45

Advised Stake & Bet Type

Name of Horse to Back

Tis Marvellous

Current Odds:

6/1 William Hill paying 6 places else 6/1 Coral & Ladbrokes both 5 places, use BOG bookies

Selection Reasoning:

Tis Marvellous did us proud in the Wokingham when runner up to Cape Bryon at the Royal Meeting. The drop back to five furlongs with a stiff finish should suit as he travelled really well in the Wokingham but didn’t see it out as strongly as Cape Bryon. He will enjoy the fast ground and is well drawn in stall 20 with the pace horse Watchable jumping from stall 17. Adam Kirby stays loyal to Tis Marvellous who races from a 2lb higher mark of 103. His Ascot record is very good and he should give another good account in this valuable handicap.

Watchable

Current Odds:

28/1 Coral and Betvictor both paying 5 places, use BOG bookies

Selection Reasoning:

Watchable won nicely at Epsom over 6 furlongs on quick ground two starts ago. A repeat of that performance would see him go close here following a fair run in the Wokingham Stakes. He led the field at Ascot setting up the race for Cape Byron who slotted in behind. The drop in trip to 5 furlongs will suit as he was bang there with Tis Marvellous and Cape Byron at the furlong pole in the Wokingham stakes. At nine years of age he has plenty of miles on the clock but proved at Epsom when breaking very fast that he retains lots of ability and is available at big prices.

My Lord And Master

Current Odds:

16/1 generally, look for bookies paying 5 places, use BOG bookies

Selection Reasoning:

My Lord And Master might be able to overcome an absence of 225 days to land this valuable pot. As a son of Mastercraftsman we can expect him to enjoy the good to firm ground more than when a fast finishing second to Aquarium over course and distance last season. Cieran Fallon rode him that day and will surely try keep closer tabs on the leaders this time round. The handicapper has dropped him a few pounds from 103 to 98. If we include his jockey’s claim of 5lbs then we look to have a well handicapped young horse on our side. Trainer William Haggas has gelded his horse over the winter and must rate him highly to start him back in such a competitive race.

Setting Sail

Current Odds:

9/1 Skybet 6 places else 9/1 generally look for 5 places, use BOG bookies

Selection Reasoning:

Setting Sail represents Godolphin with Jamie Spencer booked to ride. He won impressively at Newmarket a fortnight ago over 10 furlongs and is lumped with a 5lb penalty. Nevertheless, he is open to improvement on his seventh start. At Epsom Setting Sail didn’t really handle the chamber when beaten by Mountain Angel with Jazeel ahead in second place. York should suit this galloper better and he should go well for trainer Charlie Appleby. His wide draw in stall 23 is not ideal but hopefully Jamie spencer can jump well and get him across or else try riding a waiting race.

So Beloved

Current Odds:

22/1 generally, look for bookies paying 5 places, use BOG bookies

Selection Reasoning:

Burnt Sugar and Spanish City but have good chances having run so well in this race last year. However, I thought So Beloved ran a cracker in the Royal Hunt cup at Ascot when drawn on the wrong side. So Beloved travelled really well into that race on soft ground and was bang upsides Kynren (a non runner tomorrow) a furlong out only to ride over the final 100 yards. This 7 furlong trip with an uphill finish will suit and he ran very well when second to Sir Dancealot in a Group 3 over course and distance last summer. His current rating of 105 is fine despite carrying top weight down in handicap company. It’s a positive that Danny Tudhope rides at Newmarket.

Brando

Current Odds:

12/1 Betvictor and Coral both only 3 places, use BOG bookies

Selection Reasoning:

Three year olds have done remarkably well in this Group 1 landing three of the last four renewals. Advertise looks the best of that bunch this season but is priced up favourite. Instead we will back our friend Brando who has been saved for this race after skipping Royal Ascot. He enjoys this course and has finished third and second in the past two renewals to very good sprinters in US Navy Flag and Harry Angel. It’s hard to see anything of that calibre in this July Cup so maybe Brando will finally land a July Cup. Last year he was slow out of the gates and then had to cross over to the other group led by US Navy Flag losing out by 1 ¾ lengths.
