- Surface Bias: High-drawn horses have plenty of time to find their position on the round course, while low-drawn runners often expend energy maintaining early positions up the tiring, uphill home straight.
- Weight Feat: In 2022, the exceptional stayer Trueshan, ridden by Hollie Doyle, defied a massive top-weight of 10st 8lb to win in what is considered one of the greatest handicap performances in modern racing history.

Tony Martin runs Zanndabad in the Northumberland Plate for the second year running. Last year he was slow away and settled out the back. It proved impossible to make up ground from the back off a slow pace that day. This year he is drawn in stall 18 and will be settled off the pace. However, there is lots of pace and the stronger they go up front the better as he is well in off his current rating of 90.
Zanndabad won twice over hurdles last year and then ran respectably in the Chester Cup to finish eight. He can run a big race off a low weight of 8-13 with Niall McCullagh travelling over to take the ride.
Ian Williams has had to be very patient with the lightly raced Aqwaam. What is certain is this is a talented stayer who managed to place third in a Cambridgeshire off the same mark back in 2024. I thought he ran a fine return race off a long break when ninth at Kempton over a mile and a half.
That run should have blown the cobwebs away and set his fair for this challenge. Aqwaam carries a nice weight of 8-13 and is well drawn in stall 11. We backed him to win the Chester Cup in May 2024 when he was a little unlucky with traffic in running. He is too big a price to ignore if bringing his A game.
