Toca Madera For The Portland Handicap

The Betfred Portland Handicap is a historic Class 2 flat horse race in Great Britain held annually at Doncaster Racecourse. It takes place in September during the prestigious four-day St. Leger Festival.

Key Race Information

Distance: 5 furlongs and 143 yards (approximately 5½ furlongs).
Eligibility: Open to horses aged three years or older.
Course Type: Straight turf track.
Prize Money: Features a total prize fund of £100,000, with £51,540 awarded to the winner.

Background & TrendsEstablished in 1855, the event was originally known as the Portland Plate and featured a left-handed bend before being moved to Doncaster’s straight course. Because of its unique “in-between” distance—longer than a traditional 5-furlong minimum sprint but shorter than a standard 6-furlong race—it is famously won by versatile sprinters who can blend raw speed with stamina.

Historical standouts include the legendary filly Lochsong and the remarkable Halmahera, who won the race three consecutive times between 2002 and 2004

Let’s get into today’s preview and tips.

Toca Madera For The Portland Handicap

A field of twenty one runners line up for the Betfred Portland Heritage Handicap at Doncaster.

Toca Madera finished third over this distance at the York Ebor Festival. He meets the winner Air Force One on eight-pound better terms which looks significant. He has been running well all season hitting the frame without gaining a well-deserved win. In the Stewards Cup at Goodwood, he got stuck in traffic before flying home once in the clear but all to late to claim fifth place.

That unlucky Stewards Cup run came quickly off the back of a fourth place at Goodwood earlier in the week over five furlongs. Toca Madera has gears and stays up to six furlongs. He arrives here off the back of a second-place finish on soft ground over five at Goodwood. David Tudhope rides and if he can take a lead it will help with his finishing burst having ridden him too forward at York last month.

Doncaster 2:20
