It’s Black Friday today but much more interesting is a controversial book titled “The Black Horse Inside Coolmore” which you might have heard about?
William Jones, a former Coolmore Stud employee wrote this excellent book sharing an “insiders look” at the workings of Coolmore and its supremo John Magnier.
It’s a cracking book that I’m sure all horse racing fans like yourself and those that following the breeding side closely will thoroughly enjoy.
I loved reading this book (twice already) which mainly covers the rise of the Magnier and Coolmore horse racing and breeding success from the Vincent O’Brien years through the Robert Sangster years' right up to the current players John Magnier, Michael Tabor & Derek Smith. The final chapters also highlight a darker side to the Coolmore organization never disclosed before due to fear and intimidation!
On a more serious note, I’ve agreed to share this book with you as we all have our own stories around depression & bullying. One of my best friends took his own life in his early twenties and it affected me hugely at the time! The sense of failure and guilt I felt for not being able to prevent such a tragedy was a massive shock to me. However, it pales against the loss suffered by his close family and girlfriend.
As Christmas approaches all charities working with those suffering depression need as much support as possible. William has agreed to donate £5 to the depression awareness charity Aware for each book sold and I will double that to £10 for every book sold (least I can do)!

That’s it but all I can say is if you want a proper good read you will not be disappointed as “The Black Horse Inside Coolmore” is a proper book. William Jones deserves huge praise for his determination to get his book published despite Coolmore trying everything to prevent it hitting the bookshop shelves.
This is really a David and Goliath story set in the high heeled horse racing world.
