Today’s feature, Caspian Caviar Gold Cup, sees the first six from last month’s BetVictor Gold Cup re-oppose each other. It also features Paul Nicholls’ highly exciting five-year-old, Clan Des Obeaux, who romped home to win a well-contested Graduation Chase at Haydock three weeks’ ago. Successful in the ‘December Gold Cup’ a record four times, Nicholls’ leading hope ticks a lot of boxes. He is probably most effective over an intermediate trip and is the undoubtedly the class horse in the race. However, he is faced with the burdensome task of carrying 11st 12lbs against more experienced, battle hardened rivals. As such, I am failed to be flattered by his 3/1 odds. His price, I believe, is largely subject to his close second to Whisper on his penultimate start. That form was boasted no-end by Whisper’s narrow defeat in the Ladbrokes Trophy. Nonetheless, we all know that it’s not always wise to read form too literally and that may well be the case here. It is also worth noting that the manner of his recent win at Haydock may be deceptive given the appalling ground conditions on the day.

Instead, at twice the price, I am really keen on BetVictor Gold Cup runner-up, Starchitect. A thoroughly consistent performer, David Pipe’s runner only received 4lbs for his BetVictor Gold Cup second and meets his conqueror, Splash Of Ginge, 2lbs better off this afternoon. He was only beaten a neck and had he not made a shuddering error at the second-last, I am convinced that he would have won. That was run on the Old Course and today, he tackles the much more demanding New Course. Given how he rallied up the hill in the BetVictor, the stiffer track should further aid his cause. Indeed, it was on today’s course that he finished an eyecatching fifth in the Brown Advisory Plate at the Festival earlier this year. He is also versatile groundwise so he won’t be inconvenienced whatever way the ground ends up. Of all the runners that contested last month’s BetVictor Gold Cup, he sets a clear standard and 6/1 about him is more than fair. For me, he is a classic example of an each-way bet to nothing. Of the remainder, King’s Odyssey looks interesting. He was travelling smoothly before falling in last year’s renewal off 7lbs higher. Evan Williams looks to have had a second crack at today’s £120,000 contest in mind for some time and should the ground turn out bottomless, he would ought to have a shout.
