Alan King does well with his select team of flat racers and DUNKERRON can oblige at juicy odds in the King Charles 11 Stakes (2.40) at Newmarket on Saturday.
Having mixed in hot company like Too Darn Hot last season, he has his sights slightly lowered here by his shrewd handler in this Listed Contest over seven furlongs at Headquarters. Swindon based King is of course best known for his jumpers, but, a bit like Noel Meade in Ireland, he boasts a healthy strike rate with his runners at the summer game.
He has been thriving at both codes in recent times, with Aweedram and Chester Cup Consolation winner Coeur De Lion obliging on the level, and Smith's Bay, Sixties Belle and Hotter Than Hell all scoring over obstacles.
The King Charles has been the aim with Dunkerron from a long time back. This could be his best time of year as he won two good races, including a victory over Three Card Trick at York, in the earlier part of last season.
Stepping up in grade he was then fourth to Advertise in the July Cup and second to Dark Vision in the Vintage Stakes at Glorious Goodwood before his form tapered off a bit later in the year. He is strongly fancied for Saturday and makes big appeal at current odds.
