STONE LOOKS A ROCK SOLID BET
Paul Nicholls certainly took the racing world by storm last Saturday with eight winners, and his SOUTHFIELD STONE looks a knocking each way bet at 12/1 in next Saturday's Sky Bet Dovecote Novice Hurdle at Kempton Park.
He has been a revelation this season, and surprised and delighted Nicholls when running up a hat trick at Taunton when never coming off the bridle. The bare form was hard to assess, but the handicapper was clearly mighty impressed with a rating of 140.
He was then pitched in at the deep end in the Grade One Tolworth Hurdle at Sandown when he ran a cracker when third to Elixir De Nutz and classy stablemate Grand Sancy. That's hot form, the winner needs no introduction while the runner up Grand Sancy advertised the form in style in the Kingwell Hurdle at Wincanton last Saturday where he gamely beat two very sharp operators Sceau Royal and Vision De Flos.
What makes that particularly interesting is that at Sandown Harry Cobden found it hard to choose between Southfield Stone and Grand Sancy and in the end opted for Southfield.
It was back to Taunton then for our selection where he was pipped over an extra three furlongs by market rival Bold Plan with the rest of the field needing binoculars to find the first two.
At Sandown and at Taunton the last day he was not helped by the soft ground and a better surface forecast for Kempton will certainly work in his favour as will a return to two miles. With the Nicholls team carrying all before them the 12/1 on offer in places is hard to resist.
SOUTHFIELD STONE 0.5 point each way 12/1 Bet365 & Skybet.
