The 2026 Ladbrokes Ayr Gold Cup (Heritage Handicap) is scheduled for Saturday at 3:40 at Ayr Racecourse.

As Europe’s richest sprint handicap, the Class 2 flat race features a maximum field of 25 runners competing over a distance of 6 furlongs, carrying a total prize fund of £180,000

Key Storylines & History

  • Defending Champion Returns: Run Boy Run, trained by Richard Spencer, won the 2025 renewal and returns in an attempt to pull off a historic back-to-back double. Spencer achieved a rare feat in 2025 by winning both the Ayr Gold Cup and the Silver Cup.
  • The Scottish Curse: No Scottish-trained horse has won the race since Roman Warrior in 1975. High-profile Scottish trainers like Jim Goldie continue to hunt for a victory to break the 50-year drought.
  • Consolation Races: Because the field is strictly capped at 25 runners based on top weights, horses eliminated during the declaration stage are routed to the Ayr Silver Cup consolation race.

Let’s get into today’s preview and tips.

Run Boy Run: 95-Year Ayr Cup Double Bid

A field of twenty five runners line up for the Ayr Gold Cup Heritage Handicap.

The Ayr Gold Cup is one of the most competitive sprint handicaps of the season! I am siding with horses that have proven course and soft ground form.

Run Boy Run won this race last season in similar conditions. George Wood is his regular rider so I would expect him to ride ahead of Saffie Osborne. Run Boy Run is rated five pounds higher this year however carries the same weight of nine stone and two pounds.

Richard Spencer has put-on first-time blinkers. He has a great draw in stall 23 as that will allow him run along the rail which has fresh ground. I’m surprised he is such a big price with so much in his favour and a year more mature at five years old.

Ardisia won a nursery handicap over six furlongs at his meeting last year. He is best over six furlongs with soft in the going description. Ardisia followed up his win here in 2025 with a listed win at Redcar. Connections brought him to the Breeders Cup where he finished a gallant fifth to Gstaad in the Group 1 Juvenile Turf race.

Ardisia started off this season rated 108 and ran a couple of nice races at Ascot and Epsom at pattern class level. The handicapper has relented dropping his rating down to 99. That looks a workable mark, and he showed good form when second to Flash Harry at Goodwood last month. Hugo Palmer has booked top claiming jockey Warren Fentiman who takes off a further three pounds. I like the chances of Ardisia off a low weight of 8-10 with proven course and ground form.

Dangers are plenty with likes of Far Above Dream, Fine Interview & Hammer The Hammer on the shortlist.
