PRESIDENTIAL PRIMED TO TAKE COMMAND

The Tote Victoria Cup at Ascot (4.00) is a fiercely competitive handicap, but unexposed four year olds is the way to go as that has proved a successful strategy for the last four years and QAYSAR fits the bill perfectly.

Dropping back to seven furlongs is the key to Richard Hannon's runner. Indeed he had an almost impeccable record over this trip, finishing a close second first time out and winning his next three races.

Unfortunately he didn't back up that form at all when stepped up to a mile. Clearly highly rated, he was sent off a well backed favourite in the Silver Bowl Handicap at Haydock. He never landed a blow that day, and was equally uninspiring in the Britannia Stakes at the Royal Meeting.

After a long break he returned to action over an extended mile at Nottingham where he certainly wasn't ripping any trees up. But dropping back to his best distance now and the good to soft ground at Ascot could prove the perfect recipe.

His average runs over a mile have seen him slip down the handicap to a mark of 93. This is just his eight run and he is certainly open to considerable improvement with ground and trip now in his favour. His draw in stall 9 should be fine with plenty of pace right across the track.

Our other selection PRESIDENTIAL is also very much a seven furlongs specialist having won four times over the distance. While his Irish career with Kevin Prendergast was nothing at all to write home about, he has thrived since joining Roger Fell.

This horse is totally ground versatile and indeed early last season won successive races on soft and good to firm going. He was particularly smart when scoring at Newmarket late last season, and understandably it did not go unnoticed by the handicapper.

He's on a mark of 90 now but was a real eye catcher last time out on his seasonal debut when, having travelled sweetly out the back, he was a fast finishing third. That should leave him perfectly primed for today.

Like a lot of Invincible Spirit offspring he is improving with age, and a high draw in 25 could well prove a plus as likely leader Lady Volta is housed in stall 19. Of course in a race like this there are so many with chances like Blue Mist, Kynren, Cardsharp, Taurean Star and last year's winner Ripp Orf. It could be a real old fashioned cavalry charge, but both Qaysar and Presidential should be in the mix at the business end.
