This week’s York Ebor Meeting has been nothing short of magnificent. The four-day spectacular has become synonymous with nail-biting finishes and individual displays of brilliance and this year has proved no different. I was particular impressed by Roaring Lion’s runaway success in the Juddmonte International. Although I was keen on his chances beforehand, I could never have imagined him winning in such dismissive fashion and I am really looking forward to seeing how John Gosden’s progressive three-year-old fares over the autumn. I was also amazed by his stablemate Lah Ti Dar in the following day’s Galtres Stakes. The one-time Investec Oaks favourite absolutely tore up the Knavesmire and in doing so, the daughter of crack racemare, Dar Re Mi, has become a formidable St Leger contender.

Looking ahead to this afternoon’s action, we focus on the meeting’s signature, Sky Bet Ebor Handicap. An ultra-competitive twenty-strong field contest Europe’s richest flat handicap for which I have identified two against the field whose odds significantly misrepresent their claims. The first of these is none other than last years’ winner, Nakeeta. We actually had Ian Jardine’s stablestar onside in this last year and everything looks in place for him to emulate last year’s success. The neversay die performer has only raced thrice since running a remarkable race in the Melbourne Cup last year. Of those three starts, his most recent fifth-place effort in the JLT Cup was by far his best and with a staggering £500,000 up for grabs, I suspect that his Scottish-based handler has been patiently building up his seven-year-old for yet another big pay day. The JLT Cup was won by today’s favourite Stratum, who is now 7lbs worse off with our selection.

Given Nakeeta’s positive step in the right direction last time, I am certain that there is further improvement to follow. Despite two tame efforts earlier in the campaign, the son of Sixties Icon is very consistent. He has also shown a fondness Knavesmire in the past which is a massive plus. This week, horses like El Astronaute, Titus and Thundering Blue have all illustrated how beneficial it is to have course form on your side. Eight of the last nine winners came from double-figure stalls so his draw in Stall 15 shouldn’t be too much off a concern. I also envisage the race being run to suit our selection given the number of pacesetters in the line-up. Callum Rodriguez will undoubtedly be in no hurry early on and should we get the frenetic early gallop that I anticipate, the race should pan out perfectly again for last years’ winner.  All in all, I am very confident with his chances. Again, he will be fully primed for this afternoon and that run in the JLT Cup should have left him spot on for today. He is only 4lb higher than he was when winning this twelve months ago and with that, he is usually never too far away at the depth. At the 12/1, he is most definitely worthy of our support.

My other fancy is Tom Dascombe’s Teodoro who made every yard of running in the Group 3 Rose Of Lancaster Stakes two weeks back. There, he trounced several useful sorts such as Brorocco and Zaaki. For that effort, he is due to be bumped up 13lbs to a mark of 114, but as this is an early closing race, he escapes with just a 4lbs penalty. His draw in Stall 3 should help him find a nice early posse and provided he doesn’t expend too much energy jostling for a prominent position, I can see him running a massive race. Thankfully, Richard Kingscote will know that the competition for a front-running berth will be fierce. As such, I am hoping that he’ll adopt a more conservative approach this afternoon which I expect he will as he mount has yet to race over this trip.
