I have been a fan of Nigel Twiston-Davies’ Cogry for quiet a while. The King’s Theatre gelding ran out a determined winner at Cheltenham’s October Meeting last time on his season reappearance having finished up last season a close second to Vicente in the Scottish National. At Cheltenham, his jumping resembled a completely different Cogry to the one of seasons past. He was slick and fluent over his obstacles and jumped the final two  fences in the home straight full of running.

His ability has always been clear, but he constantly managed to scupper his chances through a series of jumping errors. Now that his jumping is much more polished, I am expecting a massive performance from him in today’s feature Ladbrokes Trophy. He’s currently available at 20/1 and personally, I find those odds ridiculous. He was well on top of Singlefarmpayment at Cheltenham last time and yet, he is almost three times his price this afternoon.  I am convinced that there is further scope for improvement off his current mark (139). The ground at Newbury is also quite good for this time of year and unlike some of those close to the head of the betting , this will suit him. To further support his claims, the talented Jamie Bargary takes off 3lbs.

Typical of Twiston-Davies’ runners this time of year, his string are in rude health. A fortnight ago, Splash Of Ginge won the BetVictor Gold Cup while last Satrday, Bristol De Mai hosed up in the Betfair Chase. Can Twiston-Davies make it a trio of perfect Saturdays?! I wouldn’t be at all surprised.

I am also quiet keen on one of his Willie Mullins’ two runners in the £250,000 contest, but it’s probably not the one you were expecting. Total Recall looked superb in the Munster National and while one cannot underestimate Mullins’ ability to improve horses, it would be a massive feat if he were to win here off 18 lbs higher. The Munster National was run on much heavier going that what he will encounter today and while he could indeed be anything, I am not entirely convinced that he can live up to his current mark of 147. His stable companion, Pleasant Company, on the other hand, is much more solid. The Malcolm Denmark owned gelding was in the process of running a huge race in this year’s Grand National until he stumbled badly over Valentines on the second circuit. He hasn’t been seen since, but you can be certain that Mullins will have him tuned to the minute for today’s three-mile, two-furlong test. The likes of Coneygree, Cogry, A Genie In A Bottle. American and Missed Approach should ensure a strong early gallop and this will play perfectly into the hands of the strong travelling son of Presenting. Like Cogry, the former Bobbyjo Chase winner should be suited by the good to soft ground conditions. At 25/1, he represents each-way support and for me, he goes in here somewhat unnoticed due to the hype surrounding his stablemate.
