Doing Fine has been saved for the better ground. As a result, connections swerved his intended engagement in the Kim Muir. Such a move may well reap handsome rewards in this afternoon’s £215,000 Coral Scottish Grand National.

On today’s quick ground, I am convinced that he is a much superior animal than his rating of 135 suggests. His form stacks up quite well. Last season, he defeated the useful Ugolin De Beaumont by an authoritative six lengths whilst giving him 18lbs. Last October, on his penultimate start, he finished a fine third behind Cogry and Singlefarmpayment in a Class 2 event at Cheltenham last October. A race that has subsequently worked out really well.

On his most recent outing in the London National at Sandown, he was a shade disappointing in fourth, but in his defense, the ground was much slower than ideal. However, he has subsequently been dropped 2lbs and that could prove all the difference today. Noel Fehily takes the mount and that’s a major positive. The Irish-born rider has previously saddled the Presenting gelding to success and has been placed on him several times. It can also be taken as significant that Noel Fehily is willing to ride off 10st 6lb, the lowest he has done so far this month has been 10st 9lb.

I also reckon that today’s contest could pan out perfectly for him. There are plenty runners likely to be scrapping for the lead whereas Fehily will be content to sit back and bide his time. Neil Mullholland’s charge may not have attempted a trip as far this before but I am of the strong opinion that today’s distance, just shy of four miles, will suit. He was staying on like a steam trip in last year’s bet365 Gold Cup over an extended three-and-a-half miles at Sandown when he was beaten by less than 2 lengths. More importantly, he also represents value in the market at 11/1. He is a consistent performer who usually finds himself in the reckoning and given the generous each-way terms on offer, he ought to be considered an ideal each-way bet.

The other runner that I am willing to put up is the Colin Tizzard trained, Sizing Tennessee who finished third in the four-miler behind Rathvinden and Ms Parfois. Sizing Tennessee was bang there over the final fence before tiring on the final climb to the winning post. His jumping held up well that day and this strong traveller will enjoy the good ground and flat course at Ayr. He was beaten a neck by Yanworth in a Grade 2 novices chase in January having previously won there over three miles on soft ground. A rating of 145 underestimates his ability and Robbie Power has chosen to ride him over Sizing Codelco. Given that Ms Parfois upheld the form so well at Aintree last week, I am surprised that he is as big as 16/1 and at those odds, he surely merits support.
