Cesarewitch Double Target For Alphonse
The Cesarewitch Handicap is a flat handicap horse race in Great Britain open to horses aged three years or older. It is run at Newmarket over a distance of 2 miles and 2 furlongs (3,621 metres), and finishes on the Rowley Mile. It is scheduled to take place each year in October.
History
“Cesarewitch” is an anglicised version of Tsesarevich, the title of the heir to the throne in Imperial Russia. The race was named in honour of Tsesarevich Alexander (later Tsar Alexander II), after he donated £300 to the Jockey Club.
The event was established in 1839, and the inaugural running was won by Cruiskeen. It was founded in the same year as another major handicap at Newmarket, the Cambridgeshire. The two races came to be known as the Autumn Double.
Cesarewitch Double Target For Alphonse
A field of only twenty runners out of a possible maximum of thirty two is the 2025 Cesarewitch at Newmarket.
Alphonse Le Grande overcame soft ground to win this race last year. He will love the good ground this time round. Tony Martin is a top-class target trainer and has booked Seamie Heffernan off a nice weight of 8-13. Alphonse Le Grande is only six pounds higher this year and is a stronger and more mature five-year-old. He was had a light campaign of only three runs this season.
Jamie Spencer found all sorts of traffic when beaten just three lengths in the Ascot Stakes behind Ascending. The winner finished second in the Ebor Handicap so that is top form. Alphonse Le Grande was a big eye catcher at York when a staying on third over two miles on fast ground. The distance, ground, jockey and weight are all suitable for a massive run.
