CAROLE’S DESTRIER (2.05) makes big appeal in the Veterans Handicap Chase at Newbury.

This represents a step down in class for Neil Mulholland’s evergreen campaigner, who was stopped in his tracks when our selection in the Grand National Trial at Haydock.

He was travelling well within himself when The Two Amigos fell in front of him and, having lost all momentum, he had to be pulled up. How he would have eventually fared we’ll never know, but it should leave him pretty fresh for this encounter.

He certainly went to Haydock in good form, having finished a good fourth to Impulsive Star in a hot contest at Warwick and before that he scored over this track and trip during the Christmas period.

The Last Samuri, who is undoubtedly on the Grand National trail again, carries top weight here and there was a lot to like about his second to Royal Vacation at Taunton and there’s no doubt that pair will cross swords again at Liverpool. Joe Farrell is a good sort, and won here and at Ayr last Spring, but this is his first outing since April so it won’t be easy.

While Houblon Des Obeaux disappointed at this track last time out, that was a rare off day and the 12 year old had scored in style here in early January where Theatre Guide – who re opposes today -.was a decent second. Sam Twiston-Davies gets the leg up on Abolitionist who chalked up a smart win at Aintree in November.

Plenty with chances then, but Carole’s Destrier, who had hardly warmed up before being forced to stop at Haydock, looks set for a much smoother passage this time and can lead them home under Tom Scudamore.
