The Cambridgeshire is a proper cavalry charge over a straight nine furlongs!
Usually, it is the younger horses ahead of the handicapper I like in this race. Bells Rock is a 6yo but undoubtedly is well handicapped off his current mark of 97. She showed up well on his previous run at Doncaster over 10f when third to Mujtaba and meets that winner on 4lbs better terms today. I have always felt Bells Rock does not stay 10 furlongs and the drop down to 9 furlongs on good ground is ideal. He loves it at Newmarket with three wins from six runs at the course. A poor run in this race last year is forgiven as he was rated 108 that day! Andrew Balding has jocked up Callum Hutchinson to take off a further 5lbs leaving Bells Rock affectively racing from a mark of 92. He is nicely drawn in stall 19 and should go well today.
Savvy Victory has a big chance not surprisingly and with Ryan Moore booked to ride is a bet. This New Bay horse is running consistently well all season having started off the season in pattern class races. He found changingoftheguard too strong in the Group 2 King George V11 stakes at Royal Ascot. That was a combination of trip too far and too high in class. Next time out at Doncaster he got beaten a nose by Protagonist over 10 furlongs. You could make a strong case for Protagonist coming out in front again off 3lbs better terms today but I think Savvy Victory stepped forward markedly at Goodwood. David Probert settled him out the back at Goodwood and he came from last to first tanking along between the two and one furlong poles. He cruised home and it was an impressive performance. A strongly run straight 9 furlong race like today will take getting and Savvy Victory has a tough of class about him so long as Ryan can switch him off early in the race.
