BACK THE WOLF IN EDINBURGH NATIONAL

Thirteen declared to run in the Edinburgh National which is one of ten races shown by ITV racing this afternoon. The bookies extra places make this marathon chase a good value betting race.

The Wolf finished second to Captain Cattistock in this race last season and is taken to exact his revenge. First time blinkers are applied which should help as he tends to lose position and then rally at the finish in his races. Last year he jumped the 2nd and 3rd last fences a big too slowly losing ground to Captain Cattistock who gained too much of a lead to hold on by ¾ of a length at the line. The Wolf meets Captain Cattistock on 9lbs better terms this time round.

Sandy Thompson is a master trainer at helping horses recover their best form and hopefully that is the case with his runner The Ferry Master. This 10yo has had his issues and remains lightly raced for a horse of his age. The Ferry Master finished fourth in the 2021 Scottish Grand National won by Mighty Thunder. On that day The Ferry Master went for home too soon in dual up front with Dingo Dollar and paid the price finishing a tired horse from two out. That run in the Scottish National was off a mark of 133. He ran some good races last season but ultimately was on too high a handicap mark. This season he has been dropped down to a mark of 120 and ran a nice prep race here over three miles on soft ground last month. The drying ground and low weight of 10-8 gives The Ferry Master a chance at causing a surprise win.
