ARISE SIR JACK

It’s a case of what’s rare is wonderful as we focus on an Irish race this afternoon in the form of the Tote Irish Cambridgeshire at the Curragh. As to be expected, the €100,000 contest is a fiercely competitive affair. Nonetheless, I have sourced two runners whose actual odds are considerably greater than their true odds. They are two locally trained runners in the shape of Michael Halford’s Katiymann and Johnny Murtagh’s Sirjack Thomas.

Sirjack Thomas is undoubtedly the most obvious of the two. A maiden winner for Madeline Tylicki at Roscommon last year, the three-year-old should improve substantially for today’s step-up in trip. Such a yearning for a longer trip was particularly obvious at Leopardstown last month. There, he followed home a useful sort of Ken Condon’s in Ice Cold In Alex doing his best work at the depth. At one stage in the home straight, he looked the most likely winner, but he probably didn't move up the gears as instantaneously as his rider had imagined.

As such, he was tapped for toe at a vital stage, but to his credit, the high-actioned grey stayed on strongly past the line. That was his first start in 51 days having previously sluiced up in a Rated Race at Sligo. Being a son of Fast Company, this horse is sure to appreciate the bit of toe in the ground and an autumn campaign is probably what connections were aiming towards all season. He is sure to progress from his Leopardstown effort.

The extra furlong, softer going and stiffer track today are also a massive plus. I suspect that this pot has been lingering on the back of Murtagh’s mind for some time as his mark of 89 is one that is just waiting to be exploited. Pricewise tipped him up in today’s Racing Post so inevitably he has been nibbled at in the betting. That being said, there is still value left in his price at 15/2 and while the sophomore may not be as battle-hardened as some of these, he’ll have no problem matching them for class.

My other selection, Katiymann, is one of four runners representing Halford’s Copper Beech Stables this afternoon. The Paul Rooney owned six-year-old has admittedly been a shade disappointing this season, but to his credit, he bounced back to form when fourth here over seven furlongs last week.

Without winning, the son of Shamardal has put up some nice efforts here in the past and off the back of another eyecatching performance at the Kildare venue last week, I am confident that he’ll right in the mix again. Seven-pound claimer Ben Coen has established himself as a promising 'up-and-coming' the past few months and the Tipperary-born apprentice got a nice tune out of him last week.

I am glad to see the young man retain the mount as his claim could make all the difference this afternoon.  At 12/1, he is worth having onside. For anyone that might be apprehensive about backing the four-time winner, I suggest that they watch his run last Saturday. For me, it shaped as one that was tailored to have him spot on for today. This could be the big race winner that his budding rider has been craving.
